Insect research and nature conservation: Martec Handels AG is actively shaping the future!
Since 2018, Martec Handels AG has consistently set a strong example for environmental protection by supporting insect research projects at the ZHAW with its annual sponsorship. This pioneering partnership not only enables the realisation of important research projects in entomology, but also contributes to the generation of important publications.
‘Climate change and insect fauna’ project: Insight into the future of the Alps
Two innovative projects were launched in 2023. One focused on the effects of climate change on the altitudinal distribution of grasshoppers in the Upper Engadin. In view of the dramatic rise in temperatures in the Alps, the findings impressively illustrate the upward shift in the distribution limit – an alarming indication of the consequences of climate change for the Alpine insect world.
Supplement to the Canton of Zurich butterfly inventory: focus on the municipality of Schlatt
Another supported project was dedicated to the systematic mapping of the butterfly fauna in the municipality of Schlatt in the canton of Zurich. This previously neglected research not only forms the basis for ecological upgrading and connectivity projects, but is also an important piece of the puzzle for understanding biodiversity in the region.
Outlook 2024: Working together for a sustainable future
In the coming year, the ZHAW, with the support of Martec Handels AG, will intensify its research into the altitudinal distribution of grasshoppers in the Upper Engadin. This data will not only serve to shed more light on the impact of climate change, but will also form the basis for promising scientific publications. In addition, research into the colonisation of new areas in glacier forelands by butterflies and grasshoppers is a focus – a previously neglected but increasingly relevant field of research.
Martec Handels AG would like to thank the research group led by Jürg Schlegel from the Institute for Environment and Natural Resources at the ZHAW for their ongoing partnership in the service of environmental protection!
