Projects with the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW): Protecting Insect Diversity through Targeted Sponsorship

Thanks to the support of Martec Handels AG, ZHAW was able to implement groundbreaking research projects in 2024. These projects not only strengthen nature conservation but also bring hope and new perspectives for biodiversity. This commitment demonstrates that together, we can make the world a better place, one step at a time.

Research: Climate Change and Insect Fauna

In the awe-inspiring glacier forefield of the Morteratsch Glacier in Pontresina, the fascinating diversity of butterflies was studied. The results are both inspiring and alarming: older areas (81–100 years) host a rich variety of species, while newly ice-free areas are nearly barren. A total of 32 species were documented, including six potentially endangered ones, such as the threatened Large Blue butterfly (Phengaris arion). These findings remind us of how fragile yet precious our natural environment truly is.

Butterfly Inventory in Lindau

Another highlight of the year was the detailed mapping of butterflies in Lindau (ZH). With 28 identified species, including the rare Provençal Fritillary (Melitaea parthenoides), this project provides critical data for ecological enhancement. Remarkably, the Provençal Fritillary was recorded in this region for the first time. Such discoveries inspire hope and reinforce our commitment to protecting nature.

Looking Ahead to 2025

Looking to the future, plans are in place to conduct further studies in the glacier forefields and to initiate a preliminary project on the overgrowth of alpine meadows. The goal is to preserve and protect valuable insect habitats over the long term. This work reflects our commitment not only to safeguarding existing natural spaces but also to actively developing and enhancing them so that future generations can continue to benefit from their diversity.

The Importance of Partnership and Sustainability

The collaboration with ZHAW is a cornerstone of our sustainability strategy and reflects our responsibility toward nature. Our sponsorship actively contributes to the preservation of biodiversity and raises awareness of the importance of conservation. Together with ZHAW, we are promoting scientific progress to protect habitats.

This long-term partnership is something we are eager to continue, supporting critical research projects and making a sustainable contribution to the future of our environment.
